Dominance of MOUZ and confident Team Spirit. Results of PGL Major Copenhagen 2024: Elimination Stage
The first CS2 major is nearing its logical conclusion. The Elimination Stage has ended, replacing the usual Legends stage. Over the past four days, we have gotten to know all the participants in the playoffs. MOUZ, Team Spirit, Cloud9, Eternal Fire, Team Vitality, G2 Esports, FaZe Clan and Natus Vincere will play on the big stage in Copenhagen. But it’s too early to move on to the decisive stage of PGL Major Copenhagen 2024; first we have to discuss the past group stage and the performance of the teams. The list of past teams turned out to be quite predictable, but the Elimination Stage gave us many surprises and their path was quite difficult.
Top favorites for the PGL Major Copenhagen 2024 title
The Elimination Stage was marked by the presence of problems among the world’s greats, for example, FaZe Clan and Natus Vincere ended up in the playoffs by a miracle, they were lucky with their last opponents at 2-2, but both teams had a huge opportunity to miss the main stage of the first CS2 major. Team Vitality was faced with an unexpected illness of its main star, Mathieu ZywOo Herbaut. It is very difficult for the star Frenchman to play and he does not stand out statistically among teammates and other e-sportsmen: according to the results of the Elimination Stage, he did not even make it into the top eight players.
MOUZ and Team Spirit took advantage of all these problems. Both teams confidently advanced to the playoffs with a score of 3-0. Compared to the other participants, they look like the undisputed favorites for the PGL Major Copenhagen 2024 championship title. So far, MOUZ looks the stronger of these two teams. Despite a difficult start against ECSTATIC and Eternal Fire, Ludvig Brollan Brolin’s roster approached the decisive match in its best form and completely destroyed Complexity, giving one round to Overpass and two to Ancient. Only Team Spirit can stop MOUZ, which we will talk about next.
The first major for Danil donk Kryshkovets turned out to be the best. Against the backdrop of problems with Mathieu ZywOo Herbaut, the young talent of Team Spirit is the main star of PGL Major Copenhagen 2024. The team itself experienced difficulties only in the decisive match with Natus Vincere, but was still able to complete the match in their favor. Team Spirit was obliged to make it to the playoffs and did so quite confidently.
Who surprised you in the group stage of the major?
The main sensation of the Elimination Stage was Eternal Fire’s entry into the playoffs. This is the first time that a Turkish team will play in the final stage of a major. Despite the problems in the Opening Stage, the team was able to surprise everyone and cope with Team Vitality, defeat FaZe Clan with a score of 13:1 and beat Virtus.pro. Eternal Fire showed, how she could have played from the very beginning of the championship and deservedly advanced. The team will not be a favorite in the playoffs, but can go even further with a victory in the quarterfinals. For the roster of Ozgur woxic Eker, this result will be the maximum at PGL Major Copenhagen 2024.
Despite the problems that were destroying Cloud9’s roster from the inside, the team was able to exceed all expectations and made it to the playoffs quite easily. After a predictable defeat from Team Spirit, the team managed to cope with ESCTATIC and even with the giants who have stable snipers – G2 Esports and Natus Vincere. Cloud9 now has good morale and a desire to win, but on the big stage the problems of the roster will be fully revealed and will not allow him to go far.
Also a big surprise was paiN. The Brazilians confidently went to their 0-3 result, but were able to come back and win an unobvious series against TheMongolz and HEROIC. The fact that a team of this level reached the final day of the group stage already deserves praise, but they were quickly stopped by Natus Vincere, who clearly did not intend to miss the playoffs. In the decisive match, paiN had no chance, which made it even more frustrating. NAVI performed extremely controversially in the group and the fate of their passage to the playoffs should not have been decided in such a simple match.
FaZe Clan and Team Vitality surprised us on the bad side. Now the teams are the best in the world, if you exclude Team Spirit from the equation. Finn karrigan Andersen’s roster showed an incomprehensible performance in the Elimination Stage, losing in the debut match to HEROIC, who after this match could not win a single map. The failure against Eternal Fire was also a surprise; Overpass is one of FaZe Clan’s strongest cards, but it only took one round.
Team Vitality found itself in a similar situation. Unlike FaZe, the team entered the playoffs with statistics of 3-1 and has an unhealthy Mathieu ZywOo Herbo, but a lineup like Vitality had to show a good game without a big impact from its main player. The team’s matches turned out to be difficult and they had a chance to lose to outsiders in the person of TheMongolz and Imperial. And in the decisive match the team almost lost to Complexity. Let’s hope that by the start of the playoffs, Mathieu ZywOo Herbaut will be back to normal and Team Vitality will be able to show their best game.
Disappointments PGL Major Copenhagen 2024: Elimination Stage
The performances of FURIA, HEROIC and Complexity were a complete disappointment on the Elimination Stage. In the case of the Brazilians, this outcome could have been predicted even from the Opening Stage; the chances of another start from 0-2 were high, but in the main group stage no one allowed the team to return. FURIA couldn’t even cope with ECSTATIC. This result will certainly affect the current roster of the club and drastic changes await it. This may even be the right but sad moment for Gabriel FalleN Toledo to end his career.
Unlike FURIA, HEROIC showed an error-free game during the Opening Stage and came out 3-0. Of course, few people believed that the team would make it to the playoffs, but it should have performed better. After the phenomenal victory over FaZe Clan, everything looked like this, but then the team seemed to break down and lost to Complexity, Virtus.pro and paiN.
Complexity was the only team from the list of disappointments that did not take part in the Opening Stage. She went through a rapid journey from a team that could surprise everyone to another failure at a major. The Elimination Stage for the team began with victories over paiN and HEROIC, but then three natural defeats followed from MOUZ, Team Vitality and FaZe Clan. The American region was able to earn additional slots for the next major, but there will not be a single representative of the scene in the playoffs of PGL Major Copenhagen 2024.
PGL's main failure in organizing a major
The last day of the Elimination Stage was not marked by loud sensations and unexpected results. A real tragedy happened in the G2 Esports vs Virtus.pro match for reaching the playoffs. Dzhami Jame Ali’s team was already one step away from reaching the playoffs, but the sniper’s computer decided that he was not destined to play on the big stage. Virtus.pro had already won the first map and were only two rounds away from victory on Inferno. At 11:11, G2 Esports was already making a save and the Russian squad was almost guaranteed to reach the match point, but the VP captain crashed from the server due to an NVIDIA driver error. Thanks to this kill, G2’s plans for the round changed and she managed to make the elimination and finish the map at 13:11. After such a most offensive and unfair defeat, Virtus.pro was no longer able to muster the strength for the decisive Anubis and lost with a score of 6:13.
Virtus.pro deserved to advance to the playoffs of PGL Major Copenhagen 2024 much more, but external factors made their own adjustments. This defeat will be the most offensive in the careers of esports players, but it should not be a reason to give up. We will see Virtus.pro at the next major, and G2 Esports will have to make every effort to show a decent game on stage.
Only the most important and spectacular matches of PGL Major Copenhagen 2024 await us.
